The ferry has docked, the cases are offloaded, and the Albanian Riviera is waiting beyond Saranda. Good coastal route planning makes the difference between spending the day watching the clock and stopping when a beach, viewpoint or village looks worth your time. With your own car, you can leave the busiest timetables behind and set a route that suits your holiday.

Start coastal route planning with realistic timings

The map can make the Riviera look compact. In kilometres, some destinations are close. In practice, coastal roads include climbs, bends, village traffic, parked cars and frequent reasons to pull over for the view. Plan around daylight and enjoyment, not the fastest possible arrival time.

From Saranda, Ksamil is an easy short drive, usually around 20 to 30 minutes depending on where you are staying and summer traffic. Butrint is close enough to pair with Ksamil in one relaxed day. The journey north towards Borsh, Himarë, Dhërmi and Llogara is more demanding, even when the distance does not appear large. Allow extra time if you want to stop at beaches rather than simply pass them.

A useful rule is to choose one main destination for the day and treat everything else as optional. For example, plan to reach Himarë for lunch, then decide whether the weather, parking and energy levels make a detour to a nearby beach worthwhile. This keeps a holiday drive enjoyable rather than rushed.

Choose a route that matches your holiday

South from Saranda: Ksamil and Butrint

This is the straightforward choice for a first full day with a hire car. Ksamil offers clear water, beach clubs and small bays, while Butrint adds a historic site and a quieter landscape of wetlands and trees. In high season, leave Saranda early if you want easier parking near the beach.

The trade-off is popularity. Ksamil can be busy in July and August, and short distances can take longer around midday. If you prefer a calmer pace, visit Butrint first, have lunch away from the busiest beachfront area, and head to the sea later in the afternoon.

North along the Riviera: Borsh, Himarë and Dhërmi

This is the classic coastal day out, with long beaches, hillside villages and wide views of the Ionian Sea. Borsh is a good first stop when travelling north from Saranda. Himarë works well as a base for lunch, fuel or supplies, while Dhërmi is better suited to travellers who are happy with a longer day behind the wheel.

Do not try to fit every named beach into one route. Pick a section of coast and give it time. A Saranda to Himarë return journey with beach stops is comfortably possible in a day. Adding Dhërmi can work if you start early and are content with less time swimming. For a more relaxed experience, consider an overnight stay further north.

Inland detours: villages, views and cooler air

The coast is not the only reason to rent a car in southern Albania. Inland roads can take you towards traditional villages, mountain views and quieter places where public transport is limited. These drives reward curiosity, but they require more care. Road surfaces can vary, bends may be tighter, and mobile signal is not guaranteed in every rural area.

If an inland route is part of your plan, check that your vehicle choice is suitable for the roads you expect to use. A compact car is excellent for Saranda, Ksamil and most main coastal journeys. For longer regional trips, a family holiday with luggage, or roads where you want extra ground clearance and confidence, an SUV may be the better fit.

Pick the right car before you set off

The best car is not always the biggest one. Saranda has narrow streets, busy hotel areas and limited spaces in peak season. Couples and solo travellers often find a compact automatic car easier to park and more economical for local beach days. It is also a sensible option if you are not used to driving abroad.

Families should look beyond the number of seats. Consider the luggage capacity, especially if you are collecting the car with suitcases and planning to carry beach bags, pushchairs or supplies. A five-seat vehicle can still feel cramped when the boot is full. For groups or travellers covering more of southern Albania, a larger saloon or SUV gives more room and can make longer drives more comfortable.

Air conditioning matters in summer, particularly after a beach stop when the car has been parked in the sun. Check the transmission too. Manual cars are common and can be a good-value choice, but an automatic may be more relaxing on steep or twisting roads.

At Rental CAR VIP ADES, vehicle details are shown clearly so you can compare seats, fuel type, transmission, luggage space, air conditioning and deposit before booking. That makes it easier to choose for the actual route you have in mind, rather than paying for features you do not need.

Plan around parking, fuel and the summer heat

On the Riviera, a perfect beach can come with difficult parking at noon. Popular places fill quickly, and parking rules or paid spaces vary by location. Arrive early for a morning swim, or visit later in the day when some visitors are leaving. Avoid blocking entrances, narrow lanes or roadside access, even if other vehicles appear to be doing so.

Keep fuel above the level you would normally accept at home. Filling stations are available in and around larger towns, but they are less convenient when you have already turned off towards a remote cove. It is easier to refuel in Saranda or Himarë than to search while running low on a hot afternoon.

Bring water in the car, sun protection and a light layer for late-evening drives. The temperature can feel very different once you climb above the coast or stay out after sunset. If children are travelling with you, build in regular breaks rather than relying on one long stop.

Drive for the road, not just the view

The views are a major part of the experience, but they can distract drivers. Pull into a safe designated space before taking photographs or checking directions. On winding sections, stay patient behind slower vehicles instead of trying to make rushed overtakes. The quickest-looking route is rarely worth a stressful manoeuvre.

Expect changing conditions. A bright morning can turn into strong glare by late afternoon, and wet roads need extra caution after dry weather. Keep an eye out for pedestrians near villages, scooters around beach areas and animals on quieter rural roads. If you are new to Albania, give yourself a little more space and time than you think you need.

It also helps to download or save your planned route before departure. Navigation is useful, but do not let it send you down an unfamiliar minor road simply to save a few minutes. When in doubt, remain on the main route and enjoy the longer, easier drive.

Build a plan that leaves room for surprises

The Riviera is best when there is space to change your mind. You may find a quiet bay before your planned stop, spot a restaurant with a sea view, or decide that one beach deserves the whole afternoon. Leave gaps in the itinerary so these moments feel like part of the holiday, not a delay.

A good day might be as simple as an early departure from Saranda, one scenic stop, a swim before lunch, a second beach later on, and a relaxed return before dark. You do not need to cover the entire coast to feel that you have seen it properly. A clean, reliable car, clear collection arrangements and a route with realistic timing give you the freedom to travel at your own pace - which is exactly how this coastline is meant to be enjoyed.
