The Vjosa River itinerary works best when you treat it as a road trip, not a single stop. From Saranda, the route takes you away from the Riviera and into southern Albania’s mountain valleys, where broad gravel banks, clear water, old stone towns and quiet villages replace beach traffic. With a car, three days gives you enough time to drive safely, stop in Gjirokastër, see the river around Tepelenë and Përmet, and still return without turning the journey into a race.

The Vjosa is one of Europe’s last major free-flowing rivers. Its character changes along the route: near Tepelenë it feels wide and open, while around Këlcyrë and Përmet the valley narrows between steep slopes. That variety is the reason to allow time for the drive itself. Public transport can reach some towns, but it is not ideal for connecting riverside viewpoints, thermal pools, small restaurants and accommodation outside the centre.

Before You Set Off from Saranda

Plan for a morning departure, particularly in summer. The most practical route heads north-east through the Muzinë pass towards Gjirokastër, then continues to Tepelenë and the Vjosa valley. Driving times are approximate because mountain roads, roadworks, rain and slow local traffic can all change the journey. From Saranda to Gjirokastër, allow around one hour and 15 minutes. Gjirokastër to Tepelenë is usually another hour to one hour and 15 minutes.

A compact car is suitable for the main roads on this itinerary and makes parking easier in Gjirokastër and Përmet. Choose a larger five-seat car if you are travelling with family luggage, or an SUV if you want extra ground clearance and comfort on rougher access roads. You do not need to take a car onto riverbanks or unmarked tracks. In fact, it is better not to: conditions can change quickly after rain, and many of the best views are reached from safe roadside pull-ins or on foot.

Carry water, sun protection, proper footwear and some cash for smaller cafés or village stops. Mobile signal is generally good in towns but can weaken in the gorge and on mountain sections. Fill up in Saranda, Gjirokastër, Tepelenë or Përmet rather than waiting for a remote petrol station.

Day 1: Saranda to Gjirokastër and Tepelenë

Leave Saranda early and make Gjirokastër your first substantial stop. The UNESCO-listed old town is not on the Vjosa itself, but it adds real value to the route. Its steep cobbled lanes, fortress and traditional stone houses offer a strong contrast to the river landscape ahead. Allow two or three hours if you want to visit properly, and park below the old town where possible rather than attempting its narrowest streets.

Continue north towards Tepelenë after lunch. This is where the Vjosa becomes central to the journey. The town sits close to the meeting point of the Vjosa and Drino rivers, with hills rising sharply around it. Tepelenë is practical for an overnight stay because it gives you access to the river corridor without requiring a long first day.

Spend the late afternoon looking for a safe viewpoint along the main road or walking through town towards the river. The appeal here is not a polished promenade. It is the scale of the valley, the sound of water and the sense that the landscape is still allowed to move naturally. In warmer months, evening light on the mountains is particularly good.

For dinner, choose a local restaurant in Tepelenë and keep the evening simple. The next day has the most scenic driving, and starting rested is more useful than trying to fit another long detour into the first day.

Day 2: Tepelenë, Këlcyrë and Përmet

Day two follows the Vjosa upstream towards Këlcyrë and Përmet. The road runs through a dramatic valley, so allow extra time for photographs, slow-moving vehicles and relaxed coffee stops. The distance is not huge, but this is not a route to rush.

Stop at Këlcyrë Gorge

Këlcyrë is one of the most striking sections of this Vjosa River itinerary. The gorge tightens the landscape around the river, with rock faces and green slopes framing the road. Stop only in marked spaces or wide safe pull-ins. Do not park on blind bends, even if the view looks tempting.

Depending on the season and river conditions, you may find guided rafting trips operating on selected stretches of the Vjosa. Rafting is a worthwhile option for active travellers, but it depends on water level, weather and the operator’s safety assessment. Book with a qualified local provider, listen to the briefing and expect plans to change if conditions are not right. Families with young children, or travellers who prefer a gentler day, may be happier enjoying the gorge from land and continuing at their own pace.

Arrive in Përmet for the Evening

From Këlcyrë, continue to Përmet, usually around 45 minutes to one hour depending on stops. This small town is known for its relaxed atmosphere, mountain setting and local food. It is a good place to stay because it puts you close to the Benjë thermal baths for the following morning.

Përmet is also the place to slow down. Walk by the river, try regional dishes and ask your accommodation or restaurant about current access conditions for nearby sights. Advice from people in town can be more useful than relying on an old map, especially after heavy rainfall.

If you have energy before dinner, visit the town centre and stock up on snacks and water for day three. Avoid planning a late-night drive into rural areas. Roads are far easier to read in daylight, and livestock or pedestrians can appear on unlit sections.

Day 3: Benjë Thermal Baths and the Return to Saranda

Start early for Benjë, a popular natural stop near Përmet. The thermal pools sit beneath an old Ottoman-era bridge, with mountain scenery all around. It is one of the better-known places in the region, so arriving before the busiest part of the day gives you a calmer experience.

The final access road can be narrower and less polished than the main route. Drive slowly, follow local signs and park only where permitted. A standard rental car can normally manage the approach in dry, reasonable conditions, but do not force your way down badly rutted tracks. If the weather has been wet, ask locally whether the route is suitable before setting off.

After the baths, begin the return towards Saranda. The direct return via Gjirokastër is the sensible choice for most travellers and normally takes around three and a half to four and a half hours from the Përmet area, depending on breaks and traffic. It is a full driving day, so leave enough daylight rather than lingering too long at every stop.

If your holiday schedule allows, there is another option: stay a third night in Përmet and return to Saranda the next morning. This is especially worthwhile for travellers who want a rafting trip, a longer hike or simply a less hurried pace. The best itinerary is the one that leaves room for the road conditions and your own energy.

Choose the Right Car for the Route

For two people with light bags, an economy hatchback or compact automatic keeps costs down and is easy to park. For a family, choose a vehicle with five seats and enough boot space for luggage, particularly if you are changing accommodation each night. An SUV is a sensible upgrade for groups, longer regional driving and travellers who prefer a higher driving position, but it is not a requirement for the main Saranda-Gjirokastër-Tepelenë-Përmet roads.

Check the rental agreement before you leave, including the deposit, fuel policy and any limits on where the vehicle can be driven. Take photos at collection, keep the provider’s support number saved, and report any warning light or tyre issue early. With Rental CAR VIP ADES, travellers can arrange local collection in Saranda and pay on arrival, which is useful when the river trip is part of a wider Riviera holiday rather than a fixed package tour.

The Vjosa rewards travellers who leave space between plans. Set off early, stop where it is safe, take the mountain roads steadily and let the river valley decide the pace of the day.
